STAR of the Northwest
is a collaborative effort to provide students with a state-of-the-art education in their home towns and region, and beyond. It provides students, even in the smallest communities, equal and equitable access to life-changing learning experiences. This is what drives our efforts; our students deserve no less.
The core of STAR is an integrated program for students in grades 11-14, providing a personalized and seamless path between high school and post-secondary education. Program areas, or pillars, will include Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Technology and Business, Education, Health Care, Inupiat Culture and Language, Process Technology
The program is designed to strengthen student engagement in middle school, and increase high school and postsecondary graduation and placement rates. It will provide students with the foundation for successful careers, and meet the needs of employers in our region and state.
Interactive distance education, classroom learning and short intensives are available to students across Northwest Arctic. These experiences help students to begin to prepare for academic and career success, beginning in middle school.
Alaskan high school and adult learners can earn certifications, credits, and in certain pillars, degrees. STAR of the Northwest is a comprehensive Learning Organization designed to offer career and academic centered education, at the exploratory, initial preparation and career-long learning levels.
Families entrust their children to STAR; safety, communication, family involvement, and living the Inupiat values in daily life are our top priorities. We foster motivation and support students to build successes.
The strengths and resources of the Northwest Arctic Borough School District, including high schools and Alaska Technical Center, along with the University of Alaska and industry partners, are combined to provide students with the best in secondary, technical and college education.
Our Residential Life Goals
The purpose of the residential life program is to create a positive and meaningful experience for STAR of the Northwest students and foster communication with their families. We also aim to design, administer, and maintain a nurturing environment where dedicated professionals serve all students as effective and caring role models and promote independence and maturity within our students by offering opportunities to develop and practice individual responsibility, leadership skills, ethical behavior, and physical and emotional wellness.
Our residential life program goals—the successes we seek to achieve with our young people—include the development of:
- A safe, healthy, and nurturing community designed to enhance the continual learning process that takes place intentionally and naturally.
- Competent learners who are independent, resourceful, inquisitive, and creative.
- Sophisticated and perceptive thinkers.
- Effective communicators who listen objectively and critically.
- Culturally aware individuals who respond to cultural differences with understanding, knowledge, and consideration.
- Responsible individuals with sound ethical foundations.
- Young men and women who set high standards for themselves while also leading lives that are intellectually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually balanced.
