Laugviik: Inupiaq word meaning "long beach"

The Kobuk K-12 School is the smallest school in the NWABSD but boosts one of the largest spirits. Located 150 miles up river from Kotzebue, (by the way the crow flies), snuggled in the shadows of the mountains and under the spotlight of the northern lights, the Kobuk School facility is the educational home of 46 students, 5 teachers, and a principal. The Kobuk Laugviik students actively engage in numerous district wide activities and sporting events.

The long beach located on the banks of the clear flowing waters of the Kobuk river is a favorite spot in the summer for boaters, fishermen, and swimmers.  In years past, the village was called "Laugviik" before the name of Kobuk was finally used.   Hence, the name "Laugviik" was selected to be the symbol of the Kobuk School.

The pictures on the right demonstrate the extreme differences between summer and winter.  Which is the favorite season?  If you live here, the best one is the one in which you are living currently.
